What this review covers
This is a review of Cal AI's published product information, checked on October 4, 2026. It is written by the Heyberry team, which makes a competing calorie tracker. We have not purchased a Cal AI subscription or run a hands-on accuracy test for this article. The decision checklist below is advice for evaluating the product, not a test result.
The official Cal AI website describes meal photo, barcode and description logging. Its US App Store listing says that accessing food scanning analysis results requires a subscription. Check those sources and the actual purchase screen for the offer available to you.
Is Cal AI free?
The store lists Cal AI as a free download with in-app purchases. That does not mean its scan results are free: the listing explicitly places them behind a subscription. When comparing apps, distinguish downloading, onboarding, a limited trial and continued meal logging.
Heyberry also requires a subscription for meal logging. A paid competitor should not be presented as an unlimited free Cal AI alternative. If you want a no-cost written record, our printable food journal is a separate free resource.
How much does Cal AI cost?
Use the subscription offer shown to you in Cal AI as the source for its current price. Check the currency, billing period, any introductory offer and the full renewal amount. Dividing an annual price by twelve can help comparison, but it does not turn an annual payment into monthly billing.
We do not select one store purchase item and present it as the price every subscriber pays. Screens and offers can vary. Save the terms of the offer you choose and check which provider manages cancellation. Removing an app does not by itself cancel its subscription.
For comparison, Heyberry's US plans are $29.99 yearly with a 3-day free trial for eligible new subscribers, or $9.99 monthly. Its pricing page describes the offer; your purchase screen confirms applicable terms.
Is Cal AI accurate?
We cannot give a verified percentage from our own testing. Recognizing food, estimating its grams and calculating its nutrition are separate tasks. A high success rate for identifying foods would not establish the same success rate for calorie totals. Our AI calorie counter accuracy guide explains these distinctions.
When evaluating an estimate, use a meal whose ingredients and quantities you know. Check each food and amount, including oil and sauces. Repeat with a different kind of meal before deciding whether the workflow fits your routine. A single plausible total or an app-store review is not a controlled benchmark.
Is Cal AI worth it for your routine?
It may fit if you prefer starting with a photo and are willing to review the result. The purchase decision depends on the actual offer and how well logging your regular meals works for you. If you cook batches, check recipe and serving handling. If you mainly eat packaged food, check barcode matches and label values.
Compare Cal AI with MyFitnessPal for database and recipe considerations, or Cal AI with SnapCalorie for another photo-first option. Our Cal AI alternative page explains Heyberry's own workflow without claiming an accuracy win.
